National Chain 2020 / Social Practices – Rita McBride, Alexandra Waierstall en Fontys Dance Academy
(English version below)

National Chain 2020 / Social Practices – Rita McBride, Alexandra Waierstall and Fontys Dance Academy

National Chain 2020 / Social Practices
was an extended version of National Chain (1997) by American artist Rita McBride. Composed of standard acoustic ceiling tile supports installed at shoulder height, each section of the grid measured 1.5 x 1.5 metres. The installation spanned the De Pont Museum’s entire central exhibition space, a former textile mill.
The work – originally intended to be activated by a visiting public in the spring of 2021 but hindered by Covid-19 regulations – was quickly adapted by McBride, whose practice has embraced collaborations and multiple disciplines since the early 1980s. She invited Düsseldorf-based choreographer Alexandra Waierstall to extend the idea of public activation to a virtual process that included dance students from the Fontys Dance Academy in Tilburg.
From March 23 through April 30, 2021, regular practice sessions with the students yielded a fluid interpretation of social navigation, guided by Waierstall and her team via video conferencing. The practice sessions could be followed daily on Instagram

Filmmaker Jeanne van der Horst recorded the students’ sessions as they navigated the social distances mediated by McBride’s artwork. Van der Horst turned the recordings into a film titled Practicing which premiered in February 2022 in De Pont
